Jim Stone, Tristan’s father, is based on Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada and has access to high end vertical grain Sitka spruce, Douglas fir and Western Red Cedar, especially difficult to find widths and lengths.

You can view photographs of the howlett designed Salcombe Yawl hull built by Mike Atfield and to be decked and finished off by ourselves. She is planked in vertical grain Sitka Spruce. We also supply Sitka for oars for the Cornish Gigs, and for Spar making by other Boatyards.

Western Red Cedar is commonly used in boatbuilding or house building and is extremely rot resistant, the advantage it has on other timber is its weight being very light its ideal in the construction of racing dinghies.
